Yes… I am writing a book.
I may be the only person who reads the instructions of each appliance or gadget. When I was pregnant, I read all the books. And I continued to read all the parenting books with each phase of childhood. When we bought a house, I stocked up on gardening books in an attempt to tame my shady yard (didn’t work). But there was no book or instructions for how to be multiracial in the United States. And I had so many questions:
What box do I check on the race questions? How should I answer questions like “What are you? Where are you from? Are you Black or White?” How do I stop being a cultural chameleon long enough to find my own voice, my own beliefs and preferences? How do I navigate a society that barely recognizes my existence? How do I find a sense of belonging?
What is my role in the fight for racial justice when I am neither Black nor White? How do I fight the invisibility of being multiracial? How do I fight to change the forms and norms that exclude me? How do I work for an inclusive future for my children, for our children?
I got tired of waiting for that book, so I’m writing it…
I draw on my personal story and interviews with multiracial people, to share how we have navigated these questions, healed from the pain, and fought for belonging for ourselves, our children and other multiracial people.
